Colonoscopy Preparation

Your exam will be scheduled through Dr. Shockey's office.

Arrival time:  Come to the GI Laboratory 60 minutes before the test time.  If you
        need to cancel for any reason, call the office as soon as possible or the GI lab at 
        (580) 220-6574.
Location of the exam:  West Entrance Mercy Memorial Hospital
        (Next to the heliport across the street from the mall)
Diet:  The day before the exam at 6 am, start a clear liquid diet and continue this
        till midnight.  Nothing should be taken by mouth after this except for the prep.
Prep:  Start the prescribed prep at 3 pm the afternoon before the procedure.
Medications:  Hold all medications at midnight till after the procedure.
        Stop Coumadin (Warfarin), Plavix (Clopidogrel), Asprin or any other blood
        thinners 4 days before the exam.  If unable to stop these, your primary care
        doctor will need to make special preparations.
        Stop Marijuana, Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), Naprosyn (Aleve), Mobic         Meloxicam), Celebrex or other arthritis medication (NSAID's) 3 days before the         procedure.
Lab tests:  If you are taking Coumadin a Protime INR test needs to be done 1-2 days
        before the procedure.  If you are a female 55 yrs. or younger a pregnancy test is
        required unless you have had a tubal ligation or hysterectomy.
Transportation:  You must have a driver present to take you home before we can
        start the procedure.
Recovery:  The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.  The recovery
        period is about 30 minutes.  After discharge, plan to eat a small, light meal.
        Further instructions will be given at the GI lab.
MiraLAX prep

Purchase:  Buy a 238 gm bottle or 14 packets of the MiraLAX.  Buy 4 Dulcolax         (Biscodyl) 5 mg laxative tablets.
Mix:  Pour the powder into 64 oz. of clear liquids (no red or purple dye).
3 pm:  Swallow 2 Dulcolax tablets.
5 pm:  Drink 16 oz. of the MiraLAX preparation.  Repeat the 16 oz. drink every 
        15 to 30 minutes till all consumed.
Nausea:  If nauseated during the prep, stop drinking for up to a hour, then restart
        as before till all finished.
8 pm:  Swallow 2 Dulcolax tablets.  May continue to drink clear liquids as needed
        till midnight.
Results:  The stool should pass and become clear over night.  Report if no desired
       results.
SUPREP instructions (alternate prep)

Purchase:  Pick up a prescription of the SUPREP Bowel Kit at the pharmacy.
7 pm:  Pour (1) 6-ounce bottle of SUPREP liquid into the mixing container.  Add cool
        drinking water to the 16-ounce line on the container and mix.  Drink ALL the         liquid in the container.
Clear liquids:  You must drink two (2) more 16-ounce containers of water over 
        the next 1 hour.
4 hours before the procedure:  Repeat the above instructions with the second 
        6-ounce bottle.  Remember to drink two (2) more 16-ounce containers of water
        over the next 1 hour..
Results:  The stool should pass and become clear.  Report if no desired results.
Clear Liquid Diet may contain any of the following:
        Clear soft drinks ( 7-Up, Sprite, Sierra Mist, Ginger Ale etc.)
        Gatorade (without any red or purple dye)
        Beef or chicken broth (without any noodles or meat)
        Jello products (without red or purple dye)
        Popsicles (without red or purple dye)
        Water
Enter the hospital at the west entrance marked by the red arrow.
